About the Middle School
In Middle School, the goal is for students to develop a love of learning through authentic and relevant learning experiences. Small class size means that no one can hide and no one gets lost in the shuffle. Students are seen as a whole person and engaged through a combination of project-based learning and experiential learning to prepare students for high school and above. By prioritizing character development by actively honing social skills, empathy, and positive communication, students are prepared to tackle their coursework and develop curiosity and work ethic in an exciting and encouraging environment.
A Middle School education at Foundry Academy includes:
-
Rigorous, hands-on academics
-
Daily PE
-
Frequent Movement Breaks
-
Small class sizes
-
Houses to work on Character development
-
Monthly field trips
-
Monthly Showcases of student work
Opportunities are the key component of the Middle School experience and our curriculum reflects that philosophy. Students are placed in classes according to their strengths and not their age to assure that all needs are met and interest is maintained.
By exposing students to a wide range of rigorous courses through hands-on experiences and off campus field trips, we instill in our students a strong educational foundation while exposing them to opportunities that spark new passions, build life skills and encourage curiosity.
Our Academics
All middle school students at Foundry Academy are guided by expert faculty in the following classes:
-
English Language Arts: Critical reading, creative thinking, and effective writing are the goals of our Middle School English program. At all levels, students dive into age-appropriate novels that enforce and strengthen units in history, science, and art. Institute of Excellence in Writing is used to develop writing skills while students study vocabulary and grammar which is integrated into the curriculum every step of the way.
-
Math: By combining fractions, decimals and percents, and the four basic operations of algebraic functions with projects that give courses relevance and authenticity, students master concepts that prepare them to enter Upper School math. Students are equipped in the fundamentals while being inspired to discover innovative answers.
-
History: To become global citizens, we must first understand the world around us. This process begins with the ancient Celts and the building of spears and flintknapping. Ancient Greece sees our students recreating Greek technology that is then pitched in a Greek Shark Tank and the Middle Ages results in huge Motte and Bailey models of an ancient castle complex. This year, the focus is American history and a better understanding of our country’s founding and the events that have supported our democracy. Courses place great importance on the practices of historical thinking, the study of primary sources, and analysis of current events.
-
Science: In keeping with Middle School students’ natural yearning for discovery, our science curriculum spans diverse topics emphasizing lab and study skills. Each year students traverse through a cycle of physical science, natural world, and environmental science. All are taught through hands-on, project based learning to light a spark of learning and curiosity that inspires a life-long passion.
-
Foreign Language: Students learn a language during their time in the Middle School. This world-language course emphasizes reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as the study of history and culture.
-
Physical Education: All Middle Schoolers participate in daily physical education classes that improve students’ health and physical skills while developing thinking, creating and feeling capacities. In addition, all students take a semester of swimming, a life skill all students should acquire.
-
Elective Courses: In the spirit of exploration, we incorporate a multitude of choices into the Middle School schedule. Students take Coding and American Inventors, Drama and Music, and Future City.
